Two memories that come to mind. First, how easy it was to cross the Rio Grande from one side to another. Second, how there was a spot in the Santa Elena canyon you come across where there was a stand of walking sticks on the US side and two Mexicans on the opposite side side. If you show interest and work out some sort of deal, the guys would swim over and finish the transaction. To my 19 year old mind I was absolutely enthralled with the whole process.
It was also my first encounter hiking a mountain taller than 6,000+ feet (Emory Peak).
