Gug how's Julia doing? She taught my daughter swim lessons for a few summers. Great gal.

She's doing very well. Thanks for asking, Martini.

If South of Philly is still open across the street with their ridiculous prices... Dempsey's should be fine...

South of Philly's daily special is out of this world, and their shrimp po'boy on Friday's is no exception. However, their regular prices aren't cheap. It's good food, though. I wish Dempsey's much success since their catfish and gumbo are so good. Their shrimp are solid as well.

Garcias sign on side that faces Wal-Mart was up still as of last week. Will look again today and see if it still is

Can someone explain what's so great about Dempsey's? It's the same exact thing as Sammy's and George's.
Literally the same exact thing, from the recipes to the food.
I worked there for a while, and my brother for years. George is a good guy, but the food is not anything spectacular or worthy of as much praise as it gets on this board.
House dressing: Sammy's house with a half cup more sugar.
gumbo: the roux is too dark for my tastes. Just tastes burnt to me.
French dip: Roast beef and provolone with a sysco au jus sauce.
Fries: blanched and then re-fried. soggy and have no taste to them. On par with George's after they put them in a brown paper bag for to-go orders. Just not good.

To each his own, mate. I feel like it's a step up from George's in quality. It's similar to Sammy ' but my dad and Sammy were successful business partners so what else would you expect?
The big difference is the time and preparation put into the food. Homemade rouxs, in house roast and gravy (so your sysco Au jus is way off), fresh herbs from the herb gardens in the back of both restaurants.
Is it elegant fine dining? Absolutely not. But it's good food at a great price.

Dempsey's is pretty good for casual food. I like the po-boys and gumbo.
Wish the beer selection didn't suck, though.
