I was totally against hoppy beers a year ago. Bud Light was my favorite and the only beer I'd drink. I had tried IPA's and hated them. Hell, Blue Moon was disgusting.
Then I started drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. After a few months of PBR, I moved on to Abita Amber. After Amber, then Turbodog and Andygator. Shite started snowballing then! Started trying "entry level" IPA's. Now I'm fricking hooked on craft beer. It's become a serious hobby for me now.
Do like everyone said, have an open mind and start with the easier drinking beers. Learn to sip beer, not guzzle it. Your palate should develop after a while. Soon after, you'll be looking for the hoppiest beers!

How do you usually drink your whisky?

They went from seasonal cans with no art - to cans with art - to 750s. The bomber killed the sales. RIP to my gateway beer

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Canebreak yet. He is in a place that obviously has access to Parish's brews and if you go to the brewery they will tell you that Envie isnt a good "entry level" beer. Canebreak is their most "friendly" beer to the masses. I think he should start there.

t. Well, the other day I ran across a 6 pack of Envie. Bought it and brought it home. To put it mildly, it was horrible. Tasted like old grapefruit. Is that a normal taste, and I'm just not ever going to be one of those guys who likes that stuff? I mean, I'm happy with sippin my whiskey, but wouldn't mind mixing it up. I know there are different "flavors", but should I just give it up now if I didn't like that? Is it possible it was just old? It was at Alexander's on highland, fwiw.
Well, if you're not used to drinking hoppy stuff, then you may want to back off and gradually get into it. Envie is a fantastic beer, and like others say, you may want to make sure the beer is relatively fresh.
That being said, if you don't like it, it just means you need to train your palate. I hated IPA's and pale ales when i first started drinking craft and imports. Imports is actually what got me into craft. It started when i'd go to the local bar with some buddies and instead of getting a bud light or something, i'd get amstel light or guiness. Now, i don't drink either (maybe guinness if its all they have) but back then, that was some of my beginner beers.
Actually the beer that started the initial transition was Sam Adams Octoberfest. It was delicate yet malty, and tasted pretty good. I don't really care for it nowadays, but tastes evolve. But like i was saying, i went from that, to imports. I would go to Calandro's and pick up random imported beers. It was fun trying everything out. After a few months of this i started to get a little burned out, so i went back to buying sam adams beers. They just came out with their noble pils lager which is a slightly hoppy lager. From there i started drinking that and went on to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. SN Pale Ale is what got me hooked on to hoppier and hoppier beers.
That being said, envie isn't as bitter as SN Pale Ale, and IMO is much better.
The trick to hoppy beers, is it just takes time. You'll eventually develop a taste for them, then that will be the only thing you want to drink. Enjoy the journey!

I think there's a happy medium here

quote:Agreed. Just like you hated your first beer as a teenager and thought it tasted like piss, you will likely hate your first craft beers. But slowly, you will grow to like them, then love them in the same way you got into beer as a wee lad
Don't buy hoppy beers. Try Canebrake or great raft souther drawl. You will progress from there
