Tried this place today for lunch. Barbecue in Baton Rouge is generally not very good. This guy, on the other hand, knows what he's doing. I'd put him up there with Barbosa's stuff. The brisket and house made sausages were on point. They serve St. Louis ribs and usually people around here serve them a little tough or pretty greasy. His just slide off the bone, have that tooth you get from St. Louis ribs (vs. baby backs) without being chewy, and were minimal on the greasy fat. I didn't try the chicken, so I can't speak to how well he does that. I usually don't pimp restaurants, but when someone is doing something good, they deserve some run, ESPECIALLY when they're in a difficult location like that.

They're in the building Fernando's used to be in across Coursey from the Investar Tower (where the Clerk of Court's office used to be). Give them a try.

Hope he makes it.

Tried it a few weeks ago.... the brisket was great. It wasn't quite there with some of the TX stuff I've had, but way better than anything I've had around BR.

I hate to say it but that location makes it really hard to anything there to succeed

That's my fear and why I want to get him some word of mouth. That barbecue is worth making a trip over there for.

I love BBQ so I'll be checking it out for sure.

Hannah Q and Smoking Aces have been my two go-to's for BBQ when I don't cook it myself.

Ed, I know this means nothing to you, but this is the first time I have ever agreed with you on anything.

Curious as to why you think this is? Seems like a very high traffic area every time I go that way.

Coursey is kind of a pain in the arse to use especially with the median running down it, it will be competing with Chimes & Willies, and that location doesn't have much of a footprint as far as curb appeal. It's been so many restaurants over the years that people gloss over it especially without any new signage.

I use coursey a few times a week and I wasn't even sure where Bayou Smokehouse was located when I saw this thread title

High traffic until 6 PM, then it's a ghost town.

Most restaurants actually do better close to others as long as there’s not too many.

I would think most barbecue places rely heavy on lunch sales. And I think any barbecue place with truly good food at fair prices would succeed just fine.

We’re they previously located on a side street off of Jefferson?

I don't know. I passed the Coursey location a few weeks ago and saw the sign up. I hit their website and it said they were pickup and delivery only. I checked again yesterday and learned they opened up their dining room and today I ate there.

That's all I know about them other than they've got good barbecue.

They were at a place that was drive through or takeout only if I’m not mistaken.

Was this the little shack place on Innisworld off Jefferson? No clue that old Fernandos was a bbq place now. I’m around that area daily and would have never known.

Yep. And if you didn’t know what you were looking for you never would have seen it. Quite possibly the worst location for a restaurant I’ve ever seen. Plus, it was only open for breakfast, lunch and/or when they ran out of food. I figured it had to be a front for something illegal because there was no way an owner would purposely be that inconspicuous.

Glad to see them giving it a better chance to succeed

thanks for the heads up my office is right around the corner and I never noticed it was there. You’re right that location has been a graveyard
