We took the kids to see Mike and go to the kids museum today.

We ended up eating lunch at Mestizos. I got the siete lunch special - the cracklin nachos, and my wife got the beef power bowl.

They were both pretty damn tasty. The queso appetizer was very good too.

It was way better than most all of the texmex places we have around Mandeville.

It's a solid place and been around for a long time now. I've never had a bad meal there.

I hadn't eaten in BR in over a decade. I was initially going to take them to Ninfas for a nostalgic queso, but I didn't realize it had closed.

That certainly was for the best lol

The queso and chicharrones can make a meal for me. Love it! Mestizo has really become a Baton Rouge institution.

I was going there back when they were on Sherwood, around '05. The 2 brothers' dad owned Carlos' that was by the bowling ally at Florida and Airline. Both had fantastic food. They definitely went from being a little meager place, with good food, to something more elevated. Jim and Carlos Jr. are good guys, even if Jr. is a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I had no idea it was around then. I don't recall it from my LSU days. Of course, Zippy's was usually as high class as I got.

I went for the first time in about a decade last week. Way better than I remembered. I'm sad it hasn't been in my rotation all these years.

The chips were pretty much the only thing I was underwhelmed by (almost felt like they were concession stand chips). But queso, margs, and entrees were all fantastic. The entrees were different and unique compared to the other stuff you see in BR. I get tired of the same entree choices at places like superior.. Wait staff was super friendly too. The owner even came by to talk to us and make sure it was going well.

It's been around since late 90s. It was where the Thai place is on sherwood next to El paso.
