Best way to gain knowledge is to experience. Just go out and try new things every time and get to know what you like and dislike. Do you care to know about all the different regions in Spain if you find out that you don't like Spanish wine? Probably not. Find what you like and go from there.

This brings up a good point. I really don't like I-talian wines, so I don't even bother trying to pick up knowledge on them. My favorite wines are California Cabs and Pinots, so I stick to that one area. After a while, you know a lot more about that region, and you tend to make fewer bust buys.

Its a fun hobby, sometimes expensive, but when you find out what you really like, you can get your costs down.

well, this is just as much about helping other people figure out what they like as it is for me getting my feet wet.

its really about me becoming more comfortable talking about wine to people.

I'm actually looking into doing this for beer. The Server level Cicerone looks like it is pretty easily attainable, but also still very educational.

ETA: It wouldnt help me very much, if at all, on the job front, but I think it would be a cool thing to acheive.
