This brings up a good point. I really don't like I-talian wines, so I don't even bother trying to pick up knowledge on them. My favorite wines are California Cabs and Pinots, so I stick to that one area. After a while, you know a lot more about that region, and you tend to make fewer bust buys.
Its a fun hobby, sometimes expensive, but when you find out what you really like, you can get your costs down.

I'm actually looking into doing this for beer. The Server level Cicerone looks like it is pretty easily attainable, but also still very educational.
ETA: It wouldnt help me very much, if at all, on the job front, but I think it would be a cool thing to acheive.
