Well you are probably going to have to use some of it for something like this. Unless somebody here is going to be generous enough to design a logo for free. You are talking a custom illustration here. Unless you just wanted a chopped photo on another which would still take a bit of time to make it look right and not cheezy or fake. Plus, photos in logos are a no no.

I totally understand that whatever I get is going to be paid for..
what is a ballpark figure for something custom like this?

Well, I usually charge 500-1000 Starting off depending on the complexity of the logo, client. Custom illustrations are always a good bit more expensive. If you go to a firm, they are going to charge you more and you will most likely be pleased with the work because the more you pay, the better the quality. If you ask a print shop or some one like that to do it, it will most likely look terrible because it will be cheap. It's all about what type of budget you are working with and how good you want the logo to be.

I could do it for you but I would like to know more about what are looking for, what it will be used for, styles that you like and budget. I can be flexible on the price for a fellow Td'r but I'm not going to bend over backwards if you know what I mean. I do this for a living so my time spent doing it is important to me. This just seems like a fun piece I would enjoy working on.

If you want to get it done somewhere else that is perfectly fine. If you ar interested in having me do it, send me an email and we can discuss it.

Also, I'm guessing you won't be using the logo to make money commercially will you? If so you would have to pay for the likeness of the Sock Monkey. I'm sure you aren't since it is a Bike club but I just wanted to get that out of the way.

On the one hand, AU03ALUM is right. Companies do get paid fairly well to create logos and brands. On the other, he did respond a bit harshly. Then again, you kind of did just show up and want a lot of work. But you did ask for help instead of making demands...

So what's a humble farker to do?

Well, I'm between books and have some time tonight so I'll draw something up. I just did a rough sketch and it might be funny- might be crap. Can't promise anything. Check back tomorrow and I'll have something done.

I see your point. I didn't mean to come off as harsh, just straight to the point because custom illustrations aren't cheap or quick. My apologies if I came off harsh.

Welcome aboard. I imagine the last thing you want to do is more artwork after an entire day of similar work. And often folks can be pretty demanding when they don’t realize how much time and effort goes into some of this stuff. It’s awesome to have someone with your professional background on the board. I would love to see some of your work.

Thank you.

I tried to capture your entire request. Now, realize this was drawn from scratch so there is no copyright issue. But that doesn’t give you permission to sell it anywhere. Of course, I’ll never know but that would really be a dick-move after I have gone to the trouble to help.

I’m not claiming this is great. But it isn’t a quick photo edit. AU03ALUM is absolutely right- custom illustrations aren’t generally cheap or quick. Please realize I don’t often go to this much trouble for someone I don’t know. Generally to get something hand drawn from me, you either need to be family, a close friend or representing a children’s team/charity. Or it has to be something I just personally want to do. I’m not asking for monetary compensation. Just try to help someone if you can.

The text should probably be outlined in black but that is actually more difficult than it appears with my software. Hope you like it.

Thanks! Yeah, as much as I LOVE what I do, it is still work lol. Projects like this are fun and unique but it really boils down to time for me. If it takes out of my work day I need to charge. If it's my free time, it's hard for me to choose to work some more, lol.

I like the illustration man. What program are you using? It seems restrictive. I say that only because you can't outline the text.

Although this site and the portfolio is not up to date, you can view some of my work there. I haven't updated it in about 2 years, lol. I haven't had the time to add portfolio content but I'm currently redesigning my website since it is out of date. But you can view some of my old work here LINK

I received and email from him yesterday and I replied explaining some things and asked questions but I haven't heard back. I did a couple of sketches last night will watching TV. I'll load the sketches if he is interested. If not and he likes what you have for him that's cool!

I like your work. Very clean, sharp images. Very recognizable brand developement. Simplicity in the most apealling manner.

I exclusively use freeware- paint.net and inkscape for vectors. They certainly do have limitations but I can't rationalize purchasing design software for a side hobby. I briefly had a Wacom tablet. I couldn't get the hang of it and it only frustrated me so I ended up giving it to a friend who works as a graphic designer. He'll get more use out of it than me. So it's just hand sketches, freeware and the mouse for my images.

Thanks! I'm a huge fan of simplicity and symmetry.

I definitely understand not buying design software for a hobby because it is expensive. Those tablets can be tricky, lol. When I started using them I was irritated by it. You do get use to it and understand it better with more use but they are still tricky. I still use hand sketches for every project first. Then, if applicable I will use the tablet but most of the time I had rather use a mouse. Tablets work great for some things and others not so much.

either one of those work for mac? I need to make a few logos and can't justify buying design software for such little use.

I know Paint.net does not. I don't know about Inkscape. I would imagine there is freeware for MAC but I exclusively use PC so I'm the wrong person to ask.

Pretty sure GIMP has a MAC version but I don't personally use it. It is more powerful than my software but the few times I have tried it, it crashed and froze my machine in the middle of a project. So I'll stick to what I know until I finally bite the bullet and buy PS.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I ended up being free after lunch today so I worked up a quickie from one of my sketches. Tim inspired me to do this for free, you bastard. It's not exactly how I would like it but it's the best I can do for the time I could commit to it. Hopefully you'll like Tim's or mine so you have something. If not best of luck finding what you want.

Mine is a bit more of a stylized sock monkey but here it is.

Also, you guys should try to buy used copies of Illustrator and PS. I'm sure it would be much cheaper!
