I would like to put an image of a person on an object and make the image take on the physical character of the object. Like for instance, if I put a face on a golf ball, I would like the face to show the little dimples on the golf ball. Anyone have any suggestions on where to look for a how-to on this task? I don't even know what this effect is called to be able to look for a how-to. I'm using GIMP. TIA.

Have you tried Gimp tutorials on your tube. That's where I have learned most of my gimping.

If you happen to own Photoshop or a similar program, you're set. There are Photoshop Tutorials all over the internet. Click here for numerous other PSP tutorials. If you don't own Photoshop, there are several free alternatives. Gimp is the most popular of these. You can download GIMP here. As with Photoshop there are many excellent Gimp tutorials available. Click here for Gimp tutorials. More Gimp tutorials are located at Gimpguru.org, Gimp Tutorials, or Grokking the Gimp.
Paint.net is a similar program and is another free alternative.

Yes NC, that is exactly what I was talking about. Does that effect have a name?

With some of the advanced featured software out there, it may have a name.
In this case, I did it in steps basically by creating a transparency of one image overlaid on another.

(1), (2) Rendered the originals. Golf Ball & Sig Pic.

(3) Stretched the sig pic to make it look a bit spheroid

(4) Cut the stretched image to the size of the Golf Ball

(5) Created a 50% opaque transparency of the trimmed Sig Pic (4) overlaid onto the Ball (1).

(6) Blurred the overlay's edges for effect & cleaned up imperfections.

Voila!
That's one of probably several ways to get it done.

The fact that you took the time to write up that explantion is very nice of you. Your contributions in this matter will improve this board over the long term as more posters learn how to Fark.
