That top one I did is a long process and I have a special script fu I downloaded to do it. The other one looks like the opacity was just lowered some.

Please don't tell me that 'prechate' was meant to be appreciate...

Anyhow, I'll tell ya how to do it via photoshop and you can translate it into gimp-speak but you basically make the text on a new layer, rasterize that text layer and make it's opacity however high you want (I suggest 60%). Best of luck.

I can't figure out how to do scripts on gimp at all. all mine end up looking like hammered horse shite. I just capture the image with skitch and use their script program. If you have a apple I suggest that method. skitch is a apple only free program.

If you can change the opacity levels on gimp without rasterizing, do that. Come to think of it, I'm not sure you have to rasterize a text layer to change the opacity although I know for sure you have to rasterize it to distort or skew a text layer. 'Rasterizing' is making a text layer editable like a normal layer.

OK, I'm gonna tell you how I did this in Photoshop and you can try to translate it to GIMP--

Duplicate your background image so you have 2 background layers-->Put your text layer in between the two background layers-->Figure out how to do a Clipping Mask on the top background layer--this will delete all of the background image, except the parts that cover the text--if you turn off the bottom background layer you can see that but best to have the bottom background layer turned on while doing the next step-->Now fool around with the Layer Effects of the text layer that has the clipping mask over it (Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Bevel/Emboss, Stroke) until you are satisfied with the results-->That's about it

Final results will look something like this:
