New to fantasy baseball.. friend asked me to join his league. When is appropriate time to draft a pitcher? Are they treated like a defense in fantasy football?

TIA

i've played for a few year. i think getting one or two aces early is pretty critical honestly. like getting kershaw is pretty awesome for Whip, ERA, and K's.

Definitely not like defense in fantasy football. if you do that you're best pitcher will be some 3rd or 4th guy in the rotation.

but baseball is pretty awesome in the fact that you could just draft one starter and all closers and that would almost guarantee you 3 categories in pitching.

so many different strategies to fantasy baseball that there is no correct answer.

But in my opinion you should always have at least one ace pitcher to anchor your team

If you are in a 10 team league you probably go hitters in the first 3 rounds... maybe take Kershaw at the backend of 1st rnd or early 2nd rnd if there; Bumgarner/ Scherzer at the back end of 3rd round knowing you'll likely get another solid hitter in the early 4th.

12+ team leagues pitching cats can be a biotch if you wait too long before snatching them.

When drafting pitchers, is it more beneficial to have some that will help in all categories or try to find a few and dominate in a couple categories (like closers with saves and ERA)?

starting and relief pitchers are different entities, and are valued differently depending on scoring

Of course you want pitchers that help in more categories. That's what separates the good pitchers from the bad.

I should have specified, we have 9 pitching spots with no distinction between SP and RP (I'm not sure if this is weird or not this is my first time playing).

Does that change anything?

Sorry for the thread hijack OP.

There are tons of strategies depending on league scoring and number of teams

We can eliminate a lot of back and forth if people would post FULL details of their leagues. Everything matters
