My longest running league is interested in doing something other than a standard redraft. I've never played anything other than that so I was looking for some info on what y'all like better keeper league or Dynasty league? If a keeper what rules do you go by?

Go with a Dynasty.

We just wrapped up our first season and it's refreshing to know that the league is going to be active in trade talks for the upcoming months.

We will have Winter Meetings where we discuss changes in the league, then vote. Our 5 round Rookie Draft will take place in the fall. It's a standard NFL style draft, not snake.

Only downside I can see is that you are finishing up this current season knowing that your team is still going to suck next season. I guess there are ways to keep everyone active throughout the regular season on a "punted" season.

I prefer keeper. I think it's a good mix of carryover from the previous year to give a benefit to building a team for the long haul and reset from drafting new players so that you can quickly change for the better if your team sucks.

We have a 2 keeper league. Any players drafted can be kept the next year at the round drafted -1. Player drafted in the second round can be kept with your 1st round pick, 8th round pick costs a 7th, etc. Any players traded maintain their keeper status in the trade. Any players picked up in free agency cost a 16th round pick the next year. Any players picked up on waivers cost a 12th the next year. Any players picked up on waivers or free agency after the trade deadline are not eligible keepers.

Players kept from the previous season can be kept again the next season, but the cost again goes down 1 round. Player drafted in the 8th round is kept the next 2 years using a 7th and 6th round pick, respectively. Players can be kept a maximum of 3 consecutive years (by any team) before going back into the draft pool.

is there a way to prevent a loophole of picking up and rostering injured players? Similar to Bell going down last year. He would have been a great stash for a team in last place looking to keep him with a 16th round pick

You should make it to where a player drafted always keeps his draft position, regardless of if they were dropped or not.

is it hard to keep track of the keepers?

My 11 year league does Keepers. Hardest thing to keep track of is the initial draft. We take a picture of the draft board and I use that to keep track of the draft picks.

In Late July I ask that everyone trim their potential list of keepers down to 3, then a week before the draft make their decision on their 1 keeper. Players can only be kept 1 year (even if they were traded), so I also keep a list of who was kept the previous year.

I have one keeper league going.

Auction draft.

Can keep UP TO 4 (you're not forced to keep any).

Cost of keeping is last year's auction price+5. 200 budget for draft and keepers.

It's pretty crazy. The late season trades are an interesting spin. We had a Le'veon Bell (insane keeper value, like 25...for reference D Johnson was drafted at 100+) for David Johnson+Cooper+Eifert trade the week before the semis. Owner gave up insane keeper value to win now.
That trade would obviously be vetoed in a redraft, but in this case it's arguable that the Bell owner got the better end of the deal (especially with Cooper and Eifert not coming through the final two weeks).

As for dynasties, I'm not sure I'd want that, seems like imbalance could be too much to overcome in the long run (speculating here) and finding a new owner to take over a terrible team might be problematic.

Yes and no. I'm the commish, and I just track it all manually in a spreadsheet. There aren't that many changes in this league to where I can just update it every few weeks or so. I don't find it to be hard to do.

Forgot to mention that if a player is picked up while injured or suspended and doesn't play another down the rest of the year, then he maintains his keeper status from the draft. Bell last year would be a good example or Adrian Peterson from two years ago with the suspension.

If a player gets injured, is dropped and picked up by another team, but then returns and plays again, then his keeper status resets. Examples would be Donte Moncrief and Sammy Watkins this year.

We do his expect for 2 slight differences, it's a 3 person keeper and they have to be 3 different positions (i.e., RB/WR/TE, or RB/WR/QB).

Also, you don't have to keep any and can use all of your draft picks if you want.
