49ers lose Bruce Ellington for the season with hamstring injury

Receiver and return man Bruce Ellington has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, the 49ers announced Tuesday. They also waived outside linebacker Jason Fanaika to get the roster down to 75 ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
Ellington suffered a hamstring injury in the third preseason game Friday against the Packers and did not return to the game.
The injury is a significant blow to San Francisco’s offense under first-year coach Chip Kelly, who was using Ellington as a slot receiver throughout training camp and the preseason.
Earlier this week, the 49ers traded former third-round pick Brandon Thomas, an offensive lineman, to the Detroit Lions for receiver and return man Jeremy Kerley.
