This is long, but a very good explanation of the purpose of the Electoral College and why it has ALWAYS been undemocratic and was set up to help the southern slave-owning states. It was never a good idea, and should definitely be done away with. The popular vote is the democratic vote, and what every other democratic country uses to elect their politicians--time for America to wake up and join the rest of the civilized world.

Just a reminder, Trump just won the fricking Presidency because of a system originally designed to appease slaveowners and we're still not going to do anything to change it. It's stuff like this that tries my faith in American democracy. It's an absolute joke that we're supposed to be an exemplar of democracy but someone can win the highest office in our land without winning the popular vote via a quirk with a sad backstory.

Just go search "Electoral College" on facebook, it's actually the #1 trend right now.

Popular vote is racist since there are a majority of white people in this country.

Am I doing this right?

What's even better is that he was running against a white person. So a white is racist against a white?

You should point out that most of the direct election systems around the world require a majority victory not a plurality so Hillary still wouldn't have won the election.

She is a female, therefore a minority. The terms racist and racism have been misused so much that it now covers all minorities, no longer just skin color.

Ugh. Every person in this country should have to watch John Adams on HBO right now. It's insane how people have no concept of the circumstances that lead to the Declaration of Independence and how those circumstances influenced the architects of the Constitution.

I heard someone saying on radio this morning that they were protesting Trump's win because "what happened is not democracy."

This just goes to show how utterly broken our education system is.

WE DO NOT LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY. The U. S. is a democratic republic. These idiots simply cannot wrap their heads around this fact.

Pre-Election:

Trump will NOT commit to accepting the results of the election -

He is deplorable. What an a-hole

Trump says the election is rigged -

He is so ridiculous. What a buffoon!

Post-Election:

We do NOT accept the results of this election!

The system is RIGGED!

silliness

Rush called it the other day. The EC will be under attack now.

The fact that she won the popular vote is the sweetest part of the whole victory. It rubs salt in the wound.

Appropriate since Democrats are running a government dependency plantation in Democrat controlled cities throughout the U.S.

I didn't see you provide a link.

The big controversies at the Constitutional Convention were between large and small states, not slave states and free.

The small states didn't like proportional representation, the big states thought it the best way to go for obvious reasons. Adding in the Senate was the compromise there.

Slavery was starting to fail as an economic institution by the time of CC. Even Virginia discussed laws for manumission.

With the invention of the cotton gin in 1793 (after the CC), all thought of freeing the slaves pretty much ceased because it was now more feasible to produce cotton.

The EC was put into the Constitution because the rich mo-fo's who made the revolution didn't trust common voters to elect the president.

One interpretation of the Revolution is that the Adams' and Jeffersons and Washingtons seized control of it so it WOULDN'T be revolutionary. It could conceivably trended towards what happened in France, a blood bath that shocked pretty much everyone. This "class warfare" idea has been superceded by Dr. Bailyn:

"In the process they ... infused into American political culture ... the major themes of eighteenth-century radical libertarianism brought to realization here. The first is the belief that power is evil, a necessity perhaps but an evil necessity; that it is infinitely corrupting; and that it must be controlled, limited, restricted in every way compatible with a minimum of civil order. Written constitutions; the separation of powers; bill of rights; limitations on executives, on legislatures, and courts; restrictions on the right to coerce and wage war—all express the profound distrust of power that lies at the ideological heart of the American Revolution and that has remained with us as a permanent legacy ever after."[8] wiki

That is very interesting because we as a country are being snuffed out by abuse of power.

It is just imperative that WE make the elected officials follow the laws to the letter.
