The racism is played up because he "hates Mexicans and muslims"
Which we know isn't true. He wants illegals to either get citizenship the right way, or leave. Simple as that.
As for muslims, he refuse for this country to be a haven for Syrian refugees under the fear of radical Islamic terrorists coming in along with them.

And Carter banned Iranians after the Shah was overthrown. There is a legal statute to do it under severe circumstances. Of course the Press never mentions this.

I think people confuse direct talk and political correctness as "you're racist" for not being careful what you say in conversation.
Trump is misunderstood by many. I tend to blame their own bias and media who are hell bent on spinning what he has said.
