What's my best bet for a basic home laptop?

I've been using a 7 year old laptop that finally decided it was time to go. I need a replacement.
What would be my best bet? I don't need anything fancy. Just your basic Office stuff and Internet.
I'd like to be able to use it to upload my GoPro videos and edit, but it's not a requirement. I also have an external hard drive, so storage is not a big factor.
I can respond with any other preferences that I have overlooked and should take into consideration.
Thank you.

Price range? There are some pretty capable Windows tablets (2 in 1 s). That could meet your needs sub $1000.

Now that Google is making the app store compatible with Chromebooks they might be worth a look.
Although it may not work for some of your GoPro needs.

Looking for one as well. $400-$800 price range. Really just going I be using for home stuff, don't need tons of space other than storing a ton of songs from iTunes...

How much memory do you want? Price is predicated on what you can live with or without.

Looking at the XPS now, what's the best place to buy a dell from? Dell directly?
Is it a good or bad idea to get the extended support? Bad idea right?

I've had good luck with Toshibas at the lower end of your price range.

Believe this or not, I heard Dell has gotten better.

Inspiron series would suffice. Dell makes a decent home laptop.

i would buy the xps over any HP. the xps is about as close as you can get to a mac-type pc

the new XPS laptops are really nice.

I have this Asus (actually the previous gen UX305FA) and like it. If you can live without a cd drive, it's tough to beat for $600.

Can I get anything decent for around $400?
The last computer I bought was an iMac in 2004. So that's how long it's been since I've looked into anything related to this at all.
