Straight to DVD movies: The hell is up with that?

So I saw a trailer for Scorpion King 4 and got to thinking...
Why was this movie made? Looks like Universal produced it. They're a massive production company, no? What business do they have making a movie that is only being released online?
Also, do movies ever start out with high hopes, only to hit roadblocks or shite the bed and subsequently suffer DVD, TV, or internet releases? I'm fairly certain I've see previews for movies, then realize months later that they never hit the theatres.

My guess is that they still own the Scorpion King trademark and are basically just leasing it to whoever made this. Its easy money for them.

Makes sense. Thought they might have signed to make a certain amount, making them obligated to finish the series or whatever. Not that the first Scorpion King was movie magic, but boy have they fallen

I have wondered about this too. Does it make any money for them?

DVD for this is already in a Walmart near you...starring Lou Ferrigno.

It probably had a 10 million dollar budget

Wouldn't it make more money in the theaters though? Why go straight to DVD when you can make more distributing it to theaters?

People who have "seen everything" will rent it from Redbox, On Demand or just buy it cheap... and they save MILLIONS of dollars by not having to promote it. Think of how much prime TV spots cost...not to mention all the materials that have to be printed for theaters.

Yeah. It's way easier to make money off of DVD's and TV showings than having do deal will the bazillion costs involved in having to distribute it to theaters. If your movie doesn't have a lot of star power and your studio has another movie it is more interested in putting on the rounds in the theater, then it makes sense to go straight-to-video. Especially if it is part of a franchise that has a name that would probably sell. The only cost there is producing the DVD/Blu-Ray, and in the case of TV showings you're pretty much raking in the ad revenue. I'm not sure about the in-and-outs of Netflix but I assume there is significant profit potential there as well. Entire companies are able to operate this way.

I didn't even know they had part 2,3, and now 4. Where have I been?
