This isn't really about any games this weekend so I didn't add this to the CFB week 7 thread.
Anybody pay for picks at teamrankings.com?
A lot of the info on that site is free, but they obviously want to sell you their picks. I'm not really interested in buying picks usually, but I found something that caught my attention while looking around over there. If you look at the point spreads link to the left hand side of the page and click on that it will bring you to their picks for the year, sorted by week. To the right they have three algorithm formulas they use to help them decide teams called; similar teams, decision tree, and power ratings. You can scroll over each one for a brief description if interested. Apparently you get a green check or red X depending on if the numbers produced by algorithm favor their pick or not.
So I went through and looked at only games where all 3 were green checks. Their record on those picks is:
week 1 3-0
week 2 7-0
week 3 6-1
week 4 3-1
week 5 1-1
week 6 6-1
YTD 26-4
That is pretty ridiculous, and they haven't had a losing week. Overall their picks aren't great, 142-145-2 if you picked every game. I tried to look at 2013 to see how the three green check system would have worked but I can't figure out how to pull up that part. It's just showing me their overall records.
I guess I'm going to keep an eye on it going forward and if they keep winning I may pay for a month and see how I can do. If anybody is a member there I would be interested in any teams they have all 3 green checks by for this week.

Anyone who pays for picks is a freaking moron.
Touting is one of the bigger scams out there. Do your own handicapping - no one out there does well enough to justify buying picks from.

I generally agree, but 26-4 is ridiculous...

I agree with you about not buying picks, and I never have. I only stumbled across this site because I googled NCAA FB strength of schedule to do some research for picks of my own.Just thought it was really good. Algorithms go over my head but numbers don't lie.
Just checked the three green check system with their NFL picks and on the season they have 6 games that got all three green checks. Record is 6-0 in those games. Also they had six picks where they received three red X's, but still picked the opposite team. If you went against the team that had 3 red X's you'd also be 6-0 on the season on those picks as well. So if you trusted those algorithms and put no emotional thought into it, for college and NFL you'd be 38-4 on the season. That's assuming you went against the team that received all 3 red X's.
I haven't gone back and looked at the college teams receiving all 3 red x's but I probably will because I'm curious now.

Even tho I don't pay for picks....
I believe 26-4 is worthy of pay for picks

So I think I read some of that wrong. I think the 3 red x's are saying all three said to take team "A", and team A lost anyway. So I think you still come out ahead but I'd need to count the 3 red x's vs. the 3 green checks and see where it is.
I'm probably not going to pay for anything, but just thought it was interesting. I'll keep watching in the future to see how they do going forward.
