Question(s) about The Brady Bunch

Was it ever explained what happened to Carol's first husband? Why did the kids take the Brady name and not keep their dad's name? I mean, I assume the back story is probably that he died or something, so the kids ditching the poor man's name is kind of messed up.
Already checked Wikipedia. Mike is widowed. No mention of what happened to dear old dad of the girls.

He was caught docking with Sam the butcher behind a Woolworth and was beaten to death by an angry mob.

Because if they didn't take the Brady name, Mike threatened to infect them all with his AIDS dick.

Carol Ann Tyler Martin Brady is her full name. All this information comes from The Honeymoon episode. Ann is her middle name, Tyler is her maiden name and Martin is her previous married name.

We learn in the first episode that Mike's wife passed away. However, the absence of Carol's first husband remains a mystery. Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of the show, wanted her to be divorced. The network wanted her to be a widow, thought being divorced was too risque for the times. The compromise was that it was never addressed one way or the other.

The girls being adopted by Mr Brady makes better sense if their biological father was a deadbeat who abandoned them.
No granparents, aunts, uncles on either side, apparently. Except cousin Oliver.

The girls thought their daddy had been run over & killed by a Louisville & Nashville train because that's what Carol told them. He was really at the Parchman Farm serving time for the robbery of an armored car.
Having lived in Phoenix before moving to LA when their mom remarried, they were big Cardinals fans. They saw how Patrick and Avery Johnson change their names to Peterson and wanted to do the same.

The father of the girls, Harold Martin, entered the witness protection program and took the name Harold Hinton. He remarried and the couple adopted a son and named him Henry "Buddy" Hinton. Buddy even went to school with his half sister Cindy.
