How often do you attempt to get a discount by offering cash?

For things like plumbing or electrical work, auto work by a local mechanic, or other services. I have gotten as much as a 20 to 25% discount. A simple question of do you offer a cash discount? often works. They give me a receipt but I suspect they throw their own receipt away or what ever.

EDT: Not talking about a check, but green bills

I've saved probabty hundreds at my tailor by paying cash.

(In extremely Asian voice) "Oh you pay cash, we do no tax and I give you extra discount too"

Do you wait until you’ve gotten the estimate before you ask, or before?

THe only time I have asked about it before and estimate was with a dentist. I needed a crown and asked him if he would offer a discount for cash. I can’t believe he said yes.

Our orthodontist knocked off $500 of a $5000 bill for my son’s braces for paying with cash

I can't tell you how bizarre it is that you just posted this. I was just (as I went to TD) ruminating over what the IRS might do in an audit of the return I filed last night, regarding thus very thing. Our rental is in a sorta transitional neighborhood and there are lots of very good locals who love cash.

Disclaimers: They tell me they pay taxes, and I believe them. I make them give me receipts.

Any Dr office will give you a cash discount. When I had terrible insurance at my last company, I would always just tell them I'm paying cash and they'd give me the discount.

I did not have DDS insurance at the time. I was going to pay with a check. I was talking about green cash. You too with the green?

My Indian customers love to haggle over price for a service. Like 100% of the time. So yes, I accept cash. The majority are doctors too.

Often

Appliances from Mom & Pop dealers.

Coins & Gold/Silver & Jewelry

I have a clothing store that will do it, I’ve known the owner for a couple of decades.

Some Home Improvement issues from trusted contractors.

Disclaimer: I am always sure that the sellers pay the appropriate taxes on these cash transactions.
