Col. David “Wil” Riggins, after a highly decorated Army career that included multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was on the verge of promotion to brigadier general in July 2013 when he got a phone call at the Pentagon from the Army’s Criminal Investigative Division to come in for a meeting. Once there, he learned that a blogger in Washington state had just accused him of raping her, when both were cadets at West Point in 1986. An investigation was underway.

Then, Riggins sued Shannon for defamation, claiming that every aspect of her rape claim on the West Point campus was “provably false,” and that she wrote two blog posts and a Facebook post “to intentionally derail [his] promotion” to brigadier general. During a six-day trial that ended Aug. 1, a jury in Fairfax County, Va., heard from both Riggins and Shannon at length. And after 2½ hours of deliberation, they sided emphatically with Riggins, awarding him $8.4 million in damages, an extraordinary amount for a defamation case between two private citizens. The jury ordered Shannon to pay $3.4 million in compensatory damages for injury to his reputation and lost wages, and $5 million in punitive damages, “to make sure nothing like this will ever happen again,” according to one of the jurors.

Bitch'll just file for bankruptcy; the good Colonel will never see a penny.
But at least he's vindicated.
But at least he's vindicated.

What is it with the state of Virginia and the chronic false rape claims????

Women who do this should face jail time.

Now, if only they could do this to every other dumb arse that decides to falsely accuse someone else of rape.

Agreed. She should do the same amount of time he would have done if he had been convicted of raping her.
ETA: Should also be dishonorably discharged and lose all benefits.

Yep, and it should be a sexual assault charge

quote:Everyone thinks I'm crazy when I say it, but we need to do like the Ancient Romans. If you falsely accused someone of a crime then you suffered the punishment of that crime. Falsely accuse someone of rape? Get the same jail sentence of a rapist.

Likewise, if a cop, prosecutor, judge, or whomever illegally works to accuse, try, or convict someone of a crime they didn't commit (like planting evidence or pursuing an innocent man just to pad your conviction rate) then send these people to jail as if they committed the crime. Dirty cop plants evidence in a murder case? Send the cop to jail for murder. That'll put an end to that shite quick.

At the very least they should have to register as sex offenders and start conversations all over their neighborhoods with flyers

This is a hard thing to put together to get a law where it protects the falsely accused, and the women who are victims. If we claim women who falsely acuse go to jail, almost no woman will ever come forward. So that clearly isn't the answer. I had this argument in sociology I believe and we tried to come up with a resolution to the issue, and we couldn't. There simply is no way to protect everyone, which is very sad.
