Somewhat of a spinoff from when to switch to blades. Since everyone says don't play blades, the next best would be to get fitted. When should this occur? Have you been fitted? How was the process? Did it change your game?

Get fit asap, outdoors. It is usually free if you buy the equipment from the fitter and offers tremendous advantages even for the most novice player. I say outdoors because the fitter must see ball flight.

When you don't foresee any large swing changes that could make the fitting pointless. In other words, you should already be a relatively consistent golfer to get fitted and buy new clubs. That's different for each person. Some people put a number on it. Can you consistently break 90?

Yes.

Start out by hitting your own 7 iron to get a baseline. Discuss your swing, your miss, your preferred shape. Then your fitter puts together a few clubs based on this. To get your specs once you find a shaft/head that suits you, he can put mark tape on the sole and hit off a plastic board to see your strike and what lie angle you need and if you need to add/subtract any length to the shaft.

It's still up to you to hit it well, but getting fit should increase the likelihood of that happening.
