Go for a hike in the park or go play in one of the many creeks running through the park, teach them to enjoy nature instead of tourist garbage in Gatlinburg.

knives and t-shirts. maybe a throwing star or two?
There are some family activities all over the area from commercial to nature. for just a few hours, I'd just walk around honestly, maybe do the tram and the sled thingy

These kids will be future eagle scouts like myself.
I've just never been to Gatlinburg.

You didn't miss much,
Pancakes, taffy, fudge, airsoft guns, swords, and air brushed t-shirts
There are some zip line and mountain coaster places around the area. Go karts and crappy entertainment museums like Ripley's Believe or not.
You can find plenty to entertain yourself in the area. It's just very tourist trap type of stuff. Same type of stuff you would find in a tourist beach town.

Well can you suggest anything else to go see or do within an hour or so from there.
We are traveling from br to Chesapeake. So I think that takes us through Birmingham and then several options from there. I just want to do or see something on the way. Not just drive hard all the way through

The Smokies are amazing and spending some time in them is worth the trip if you want to go hiking or splashing in the creek. If you like to fly fish or trout fish, it can be a real challenge there even though you are catching tiny fish. The mountains are one of my favorite places to go when I get downtime.
Plenty to do on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga and around Chattanooga too.
What interests does your family enjoy? If you like doing the touristy stuff, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge has a ton of it. Don't let me bashing it turn you off it, lots of people including me have had a ton of fun there.

Stay away from Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg unless you like being surrounded by lots of low class, overweight people and junk tourist shops. There is always a lot of traffic and way too many people. As others have said try something nature oriented like Cades Cove or one of the many hiking or scenic trips. No matter where you go it may be a little crowded due to the popularity this time of year.

Dollywood is fun, clean, and kid friendly.

Chimneys Picnic Area about 7 miles south of Gatlinburg. Excellent place to rest, take a short hike, take in the scenery. Beautiful creek with cascading water.

Check out Navitat in Bernardsville, NC. Best ziplining around.
