Just watched this hour long special on HBO of a book I had to read for Genetic Engineering when I was at LSU. Thought it was pretty good. Just wanted to see if anyone else watched this and your opinions on it. Obviously, the book is much better, and there was a lot not touched on for an hour show. Having said that, I think it's worth a watch.
I would especially recommend the book to anyone who works in the medical field.

I didn't know there was a movie but the story is very interesting. I always thought it a bit strange how the family and the storytellers think of it as her living on all over the world when it is really the tumor that killed her living on.

I watched the movie last night. Very interesting story. The movie had a Lifetime production feel to it. Oprah

About the movie (religious aspects) or the lack of compensation for the family from Hopkins?
ETA: I'm seeing comments on experimenting on people. Not sure if utilizing cells from a biopsy is experimenting "on people". I guess that's a medical ethics and philosophical discussion that does not have a correct answer.

I haven't seen the movie but read the book and it was fantastic. Yes, even from a white woman.
The whole "white women take a seat" narrative, especially in the case of someone working as an ally and using their ability to do so to bring justice to the family is absolutely ridiculous. They can frick off.

It's definitely an ethic issue. Her cells were obtained without consent (a big, big medical issue) while she was receiving treatment at John Hopkins. Those cells were obviously used for a lot of good but no one was ever compensated.
Now the Tuskegee syphillis study is a whole other beast and poor, black men were definitely experimented on.

So I guess that the author did not read the book..... because I have not yet to see the movie but from what I just read it follows it pretty closely

Dafuq? The author is a critical part of the story. The movie is not a New England Journal of Medicine article, it's about the process of getting the book done.
