I thought the theory was that the mob was influential in the state of Illinois during the 1960 election? Although this always seems strange given that Robert went after the mob, but I guess that doesn't invalidate their involvement before he came after them.

Joe Kennedy and Giancana worked together to get the union members to deliver Kennedy West Virginia in 1960 primary. It was symbolic to get the most protestant state to chose JFK.

pulls the info from 'Inside the Kremlin’s Cold War: From Stalin to Krushchev'. talks about how much krushchev was hoping Kennedy would become president because he was hoping Kennedy would be another franklin roosevelt so they could form a relationship like stalin and roosevelt had. krushchev told KGB agents in America to analyze the situation and if there was anything they could do to help to do it. krushchev called Kennedy his president after he was elected and told Kennedy at there first meeting that he helped get him elected.

As I understand it, Papa Joe Kennedy approached Giancana without the knowledge of JFK or RFK. So when RFK went after the mob, Giancana considered it a double cross, after delivered the votes for JFK. And we know the rest of the story.
