I have a 4TB WD MyPassport external hard drive. I have a bunch of TV shows and movies on it, but when I plug the USB into the TV, the light on the Hard Drive comes on but the TV doesn't recognize it. Is there a way to play from my hard drive directly through the TV?

The short answer is that you need a smart TV that is capable of reading the drive and supports the format/file type of the movie files. If the TV is not capable then you will need additional hardware/software to do what you want to do such a home theater computer connected to your TV or a Roku type device connected to your TV. Here's an example using the Roku 3: LINK

There are a number of options available to you depending on your preference and what your current set up it.

1. Like Gurley said...smart tv should be able to recognize it.
2. Most, if not all, media players have this functionality. Roku, amazon fire, etc. have a usb port.
3. Media servers like plex connect to your computer and remote storage and allow you to stream from anywhere.
4. many new routers have usb ports for attaching a harddrive and all of my computers/tablets/TV will recognize this from my router and allow me to play directly from there.

Check out the WDTV Live. It is a box that you can hook up a hdd to, and has a hdmi connection to your TV. It will literally play any file type you throw at it. I love mine.

I have one too (WDTV Live). Love it. Cast my Samsung phone straight to the TV with a quick swipe and press.
