Covering a 10x14 patio in Florida

Obviously it's pretty damn hot around here in the summer and my back patio faces the west so afternoons are rough. I love to grill and cook outside, especially during football season but it's just so miserable without any shade at all.
I am only going to be here another 2 years so if possible I would rather something somewhat inexpensive but not completely opposed to some nicer/permanent. The dimensions would probably be closer to 9x14 bc of the overhang of the roof.
Just wanted to see if anyone had some thoughts/ideas I may not have thought of.
BTW, why are pergolas so expensive?? I don't get it.

I cover my pool with a greenhouse shade cloth to keep the water from getting too hot. I ordered it from a greenhouse supply company many years ago. They come in different percentages of shade. Here is a link. Not my pool, but just for an example. LINK
It's not waterproof but will give some shade and you can bring it with you when you move. Pretty sure Lowe's or Home Depot has some with grommets along the edges. Google is your friend.

Thick wood used to build a pergola is very high priced.
i would not do a pergola personally, i just think it gets too hot in the south for that to accomplish what you are looking for. You should be able to build something that size yourself if you want to try. Like a nice lean-to or something.
