Anybody ever hunted Elk on public land in Colorado? Looking into going to the White River National Forest. It's most likely going to be 4 of us going. We're planning to go during the archery season in late September. We plan on purchasing our tags over the counter when they go on sale in July.

Colorado's regulations are way more confusing than what we have here in Louisiana. I'm just looking for any insight from anyone that's ever been. TIA

Get into really good shape physically, but more importantly mentally. That's about the best advice I can give you.

I think I messed up the link the first time. Try it again now, it should have the entire thread.

I went the 3rd week of September in 2012... we hunted in SW Colorado in the San Juan National Forest to the north of Mancos. There were plenty of OTC tags left in that area... we picked ours up at Walmart on the way in to town.

We stayed with Lost Canyon Outfitters and did a DIY hunt. They had shower and laundry facilities and tent camping for $10/night.

I harvested a 5x4 Bull on the 4th day and we saw several more big bulls in that area. If you give any thoughts to this area, contact me and Ill be more than happy to show you where we hunted.

We're seriously considering somewhere in Unit 32 south of Meeker, Co. I have been checking out the maps that show the migration and summer and winter concentrations and looking at the success rates all morning. The valley that parachute creek runs through looks very promising.
