I was looking into a Royal Caribbean cruise that ports out of Galveston, TX. The ship is the Liberty of the Seas and it ports at Costa Maya, Belize City, Cozumel.

Are any of you familiar with Royal Caribbean cruises, the locations listed, or cruising with a toddler?

Thanks for your help.

We sailed on Liberty of the Seas this past November, which was the first time this ship sailed from Galveston. It's a great ship! Cozumel is always fun, and we liked the snorkeling in Belze. Costa maya is ok, but not much to do. We took a taxi to blue Kay beach there. Hope that helps. The ship added the water slide area this past Feb.

We have cruised Royal Caribbean a few times. Last year we cruised out of Port Canaveral on Liberty's sister ship Independence of the Seas. It was beautiful! We love Royal Caribbean! We were considering cruising this summer on the Liberty out of Galveston in July except for a different itinerary. The Liberty was just refurbished in January. We have cruised out of Galveston before and had no problems and it is a shorter drive than Port Canaveral/Miami.

Have you cruised before? Royal is a great line but it just depends what you are looking for in a cruise. Royal isn't the best fit for me because I feel like it is a giant floating mall but that is great sometimes. I would probably love it on a longer cruise if I ever took one beyond 7 days. Just do your research on the ship. I have been to Belize City and Cozumel. You really need to take an excursion because there is nothing to see if you don't. Cozumel is great, go to one of the all inclusive beaches. For around $75 per person you can eat and drink all you want and they have loungers on the beach plus nice pool areas. Mr. Sanchos is one and Nachi Cocom is another.

We have never been on a cruise before. Everything I read was stay away from carnival and it was the closest one from Baton Rouge that wasn't carnival. We are looking at going in Jan of 17. We would be going with another couple. We both have toddlers. Thanks again for all the information.

Nothing against the OT but it's nice to see someone ask this question without the comments from the peanut gallery.

I have enjoyed RCCL in the past but now partial to Oceania. I think you will enjoy that cruise

Oceanic looks nice but most appear to relatively longer and a lot more expensive.

I looked at going to the Zoo in Belize with the kids, paradise beach in Cozumel, but have not found anything in Costa Maya.

I sailed on the Liberty in February (Cozumel, grand Cayman and Jamaica). It's the Dreamworls cruise so kind of an answer to the Disney activities with character breakfasts and meet and greets.

We sailed when the ship was straight out of dry dock and the service sucked arse but the ship was awesome. The flow rider is a blast but after getting thrown on the Mat a
Half dozen times it starts to hurt. The new water slides were a blast and the new kids play area out by the pool was great too.

I think RC is the best of the "average" cruise lines.
Especially if you are cruising with a toddler. I take it that you are a young to middle age adult, which is prime for RC's crowd. You'll enjoy it.

But, if it is possible, RC does have better cruise ships than the ones that leave out of Texas. If you can make it to Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale's ports, they have bigger and newer ships. But it may not be worth for that much potential extra travel to get to the port.

In Cozumel we much prefer Paradise Beach to one of the all inclusives.

Have you sailed on the liberty?

Nothing about that ship will have you wanting more or bigger. In Cozumel we docked directly to the Allure and the size difference in the allure seems more vertical than anything else (three additional decks I think). The liberty is massive and gorgeous.

As far as the ship goes I'd actually put it above the Disney Fantasy.

The quantum, ovation and anthem are all newer but it isn't like the liberty is the carnival elation.

I have not, so I guess I had better reserve total judgment. The Allure is much wider that most ships. Liberty is 184 ft. wide vs. 213 ft. wide. Nothing to sneeze at about Liberty. I have been on Freedom, which is approx. the same size, and that felt plenty large enough.

I'm sure Disney cruises are nice, but IMO they are not worth 2X price of cruises offered on RC or NCL, etc. even if you have small children.

Good info thank you all. Anything I should avoid in those ports.

"Worth it" is so subjective because there isn't really a right or wrong answer but unless you've sailed it I think it's hard to say one way or the other. Disney's service is top notch. NCL, Princess, RC do not come close. Disney is geared towards families (not kids, but families) way more than the other cruise lines so it actually feels like there is more to do. No, there are no casinos (so they charge more for the cruise) and until a couple months ago you could carry on whatever alcohol you could fit in your carry on but for families it was amazing.

My comments was purely based on the ship (not vacation) between the Liberty and Fantasy. The difference comes in execution and Disney completely blows RC out of the water. Disney thinks of things before you do....always one step ahead.

For example (just a small one from our last trip)....we sailed on the Liberty on Super Bowl Sunday and we were the first cruise out of dry dock with alot of enhancements so we were expecting things to not be completely finished.

The poolside jumbotron was available to watch the game and that was more than appropriate. It was still cold outside so nobody wanted to really get in the pool anyway.

Well, day 1 (at sea) the brand new kids splash pad, slide, pool area was still closed as they had some water pressure issues AND the two new water slides were not open as they were effected by the water same issue. because the work was being done on the slides the flowrider was closed as well (along with the basketball courts and rock climbing wall) so the main pool area was PACKED!. Now, I don't have an issue with the things being closed, I get it...shite happens. BUT, when it does you adjust your entertainment schedule. Add a belly flop contest, play music videos on the outside TV, ramp up the poolside bar staff and waiters...nope. RC did none of that. Instead, we watched a reply of the super bowl then 2 hours of cricket and every bar on the pool deck was overwhelmed.

With Disney, things go wrong but you dont know it.

Here is part of the kid splash pad area. You can only see about half of it here

The flowrider. They do knee boarding and sand up surfing times throughout the day. You can see the two large sides over my right shoulder (which were open on our cruise) and the large grey on over my left shoulder (which was not open).

The Liberty is a huge ship...but it didn't really feel that way.

Docked next to the Allure in Cozumel. When you walked down the pier it's almost like the balconies on each ship were side by side. People could share magazines..
