New 16 team tournament, like the NIT, with all games in Las Vegas
A bunch of college players on the strip in Vegas for a week.....what could possibly go wrong???

LAS VEGAS -- For the first time, a season-ending college basketball tournament will be played in Las Vegas when the new "Vegas 16" tips off this upcoming March. The new 16-team event serves as the finale of a busy college basketball season in Las Vegas
The new Vegas 16 tournament, similar to the Postseason NIT, features 16 teams playing a single-elimination tournament on March 26-30, 2016 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. All 16 teams will be housed at resort properties on the Las Vegas Strip. The tournament field and seeding will be announced shortly after the NCAA Tournament announcement on Selection Sunday. The action then tips 13 days later to give teams and fans ample time to schedule travel to Las Vegas.
"While the NCAA Tournament continues to rule Madness, there's been a real need to create an affordable, attractive event at a destination location for teams who have had a terrific season yet were unable to qualify as one of the top 68 programs on Selection Sunday," said Brooks Downing, President and CEO of bd Global. "Our research indicates we will attract high-quality programs with this simplistic approach. This will be a premium event in one premium location."

So between the NCAA Tournament, NIT, CIT, CBI, and Vegas 16... 164 teams will play in a postseason tournament this year.
Awesome.
Awesome.

I agree...just seems like a good time to be had.
I get the impression that this group might try to lure some teams who would normally go to the NIT to their tournament. I don't know how the pecking order works....but it might be at least a little interesting to see what kinds of teams this tournament can get.

I envision a lot of suspensions to start at the beginning of next season for players that play in this tournament.
Sin City has a lot of temptations

Ask UNLV or the 80's

Awesome. Another way for bad coaches to keep their job because they "made the post season".

You really think this is the motivation behind it?

Out of 347 teams, that's not too bad considering how the NBA operates at what 53% of teams get in. Also considering that only what 64 are actually playing for something worth a damn.

Not even remotely the same thing. There are mechanisms in place keeping a reasonably level playing field in the NBA.

Works for me. I could travel 15 minutes and see the Tigers in person.
Vegas loves hype, so an LSU team with Ben Simmons would be a natural choice for them.

With the SEC ties to ESPN, who owns the NIT, I'd imagine we couldn't turn down an NIT bid for this?

It's the world we live in. Everybody gets a trophy.

Not nearly as awesome as football.
There are 347 division 1 basketball teams, compare that to FBS football 128 teams with 84 in post season.

The problem with this (and I'm just making a guess here) is that with the NIT, the NCAA pays for lodging, travel expenses, arena costs, etc. I'd imagine the schools would have to pay for it themselves here similar to the CBI tournament. That doesn't mean some big name teams that had a shitty year won't do it, I just don't see them luring a team from the NIT.

Oh yeah. That's definitely gonna be their strategy.

Are you kidding? The NIT is just as awesome as the Texas or Music City Bowl in football
