I have this external hard drive that I've alway used on my HP laptop and Mac Book Pro. I now can't write to it from my mac book pro. It says it's read only. I haven't found a clear solution online. Any suggestions? TIA

From My Computer, right click on the drive and select Properties. Look for the Security tab and see if the permissions there are limited to Read-Only and see if you can allow full permissions to write, edit, whatever else. Don't know if it'll be that easy, but it's worth a shot.

Also along those lines, you may have to be logged in to the computer as the Administrator to effect such changes.

Just checked. Everyone has full permission. It's like the mac book recognized that it was a different format or something. Was hoping I wouldn't have to reformat to fix this.

does the drive have a write protection switch on it?

google results say that macs can't write an ntfs formatted drive, only read it. that may be your problem

Yeah I read about the formats. The mac has always read/written to the drive with no problem.
