Pulling recorded shows off of cable box

Is it at all possible to pull recorded shows off of a uverse cable box and put them on a storage device (flash drive) to play on another device (portable dvd player)? I've never heard of it being done but just curious if its possible.

I've looked into it myself. From what I remember it consisted of removing the HDD from the DVR and putting it into an external inclosure. Then plugging that into a Linux computer and just copy/pasting them over to the flash drive. Way too much trouble to do over just going to thepiratebay.org and downloading whatever I wanted to watch (and the commercials are already removed for you!).
