I'll admit that i'm a total vinyl noob and bought this because I had no idea what I was doing. It's just a bunch of cheap plastic and the turntable kept on rattling. When I tried to fix it it stopped working altogether, so i'm gonna send it back. Can someone please point me in the right direction here? I'm 20 (21 on Monday ) and live in an apartment so I can't really be dropping 1000 bucks on a sweet set up. Just looking for a basic set up that's actually worth my money.

Do you have a maximum amount you are willing to spend?

I don't really know where to start, let's say $400. Although that's not ideal. Closer to 200 if possible.

I looked through the first few pages of that thread earlier but those setups looked really nice. I don't know much about reliable brands either.

I'm assuming you need speakers included so maybe something like this would get you up and running. If you wanted to save a bit more this would be better because it would allow you the option to upgrade your cartridge later on. Marco from the other thread is who you really need to chime in.

Is 350 the minimum I'm looking at shelling out? That's doable but it'll put a dent in my checking account. Im a student and I work at Lowe's so I'm not exactly rolling in cash at the moment . The MB is dead right now so I'll probably bump this tomorrow.

No. I just remembered those 2 from when I was looking. I just got my first turntable last fall so I'm a novice too.

I think that Audio-Technica at around $250 is the absolute minimum - I don't think you have to spend $350 to $400, but you will have more choices if you do.

The $250 AT will seem like a Ferrari compared to the toy you bought, though.

ETA: Crap - you don't even have an amp or speakers do you?

I'll have to noodle on it some more.

Yeah, I'm going to echo this:

AT LP60 with speakers

Good call Folker - this is about your floor for anything remotely decent, self-contained vinyl playback rig.

However, I encourage you to consider that the turntable is only about 1/3 of the experience. Quality amplification and speakers - which will cost you, roughly $1000 as floor, just for them, are required to get the full benefits from vinyl in the first place.

The speakers with the above set up will quickly be relegated to Craig's List or Goodwill after you upgrade your backbone.

If you can find a solid used one for around $400, it may end up being a good deal. $700 and you'll not need to upgrade for a while.
