Sonic and Mario in Unreal Engine 4

Based on what though? Are we comparing sales of the Wii U games? Wii and Wii U Mario games? NES and SNES vs N64 through Wii U 3D Mario?

I've seen some of those New Super Mario Bros sales, and while they sold tons of copies, I don't think it's a fair barometer for people preferring 2D over 3D.

The original New Super Mario Brothers was the first 2D Mario Platformer since the SNES which carries a lot of appeal. Secondly, those games were pretty tremendous party games on a system that everyone and their dog owned. A lot people likely bought them not because they thought it was the superior Mario game but because it was another game they could pull out at a party like Mario Kart.

Comparatively speaking, no one owns a Wii U. The sales between 3D World and New Super Mario Brothers are much closer, despite the 2D game releasing with a significant head start.
