Any suggestions for around $600? I wanna save as much money on the rifle as possible to put better optics on it. TIA

S&W M&P15 Sport or Ruger AR556. They are two of the highest-quality budget AR15s you can buy. Both come with factory iron sights and are very light weight.

(didnt see this was already posted, but heres a link to one)
You could go for an inexpensive Smith and Wesson M&P15 LINK
Doesn't have every feature in the world but for what you're talking about it would work perfectly. Heard good things about them and for the price you cant really go wrong, Also weighs only 6.45 lbs.

You could also go for an AK47 underfolder which would be more low profile LINK

If you're trying to get as short as possible while also being as effective as it can, I would go with a 14.5 with a pinned flash hider. The extra few inches of barrel will give you more velocity rather than wasting all that with a huge flash hider. Then again, for me, the extra 1.5" with getting a 16" isn't a big deal since it gives me the ability to change the muzzle device later. I like the flexibility but it's really personal preference.

I completely agree, I don't really understand the 11.5/5.5 and I may not have bought it if I knew that this was one. Also agree that having the 16" with the versatility is nice to have. I plan on getting a gun trust and want to get some suppressors which obviously require the threaded barrel.

After having a 14.5" AR. I think they are pretty dumb.

Just stick with 16 or sbr. It's a pita when you need to change stuff or fix things.

Keep in mind those "budget" AR15's, especially the M&P's, have a habit matching or even out performing much more expensive brands. You may have to put up with some proprietary parts but you get an extremely good foundation to work from.

I'm sure if you really tried you could probably build a 300blk for cheap and just roll with iron sights until you get your optic.

I fell in love with that round when I went hog hunting in Oklahoma. I carried it around all day stalking and jumping hogs and the expansion of the round was beyond impressive. Everyone else in our group was blown away.

I completely agree. I saw my friend's M&P15 Sport run through tons of rounds without a single failure, and that includes about 700 rounds of Tula steel. It is a beast of a gun.

I also like that the Ruger AR556 has a 1:8 twist in the barrel. That's a rarity for the price point they are sold.

Smith and Wesson and Ruger are easily my two favorite American brands for firearms in general. Love em.

S&W does probably one of the best AR barrels at any reasonable price point. Ruger offers very good hammer forged barrels in a rifle that costs double what you'll pay for just a hammer forged barrel from the high-tier maker.
