Van Cleef, I beg of you to please go to the 3rd Floor of the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Look up the Lincoln papers and you will see that you are wrong. Direct quote from Lincoln's manuscript , the War was not ALL about slavery. Did it play a part , Yes it did but if you think the Confederate States were only fighting to preserve Slavery then I urge you to please read the Lincoln papers that Im referring you to. Better than that send me or let me know if you want the truth and I will send you my email address and will send you papers myself that I researched while at the Hebert Law Center in Professor Ken Murchison's American Legal History Class. Not trying to be a smartass but you can bet that the Confederates were not fighting for the preservation of slavery as an institution nor was that Lincoln's reasons to wage war.

You are wrong. yes, Lincoln indicated he would preserve slavery if he could save the union. his main goal was to save the union. that was the sworn duty of every president before and since.
however, the motives for southern secession can only be pinned on the preservation of slavery.
when the southern states broke away and formed the csa, they did so to protect slavery. how else can you explain them drafting a constitution verbatim to the us constitution except for a provision to guarantee the right to own slaves?
The fighting class of the csa were mostly conscripts who never directly benefited from slavery. but the hotheaded aristocratic southern politicians who committed treason by starting the csa benefited greatly from slavery.
