Does anybody carry the typically optional sewer/sump backup coverage? I feel like this is necessary for older, more condensed neighborhoods, but not so necessary for newer neighborhoods with newer sewer piping. Does anybody have knowledge on this?

What is the wording on the endorsement? It covers offsite cloggs that allow water backup into the home?

Sump pump/ water backup claims tend to deal with basements...

The actual wording on my latest quote says "Sewer or drain water backup coverage: this insures your property for damage caused by the backup of sewers or drains"

It is from off property water. If you have an onsite clogg, and a backup, most homeowner's policies will cover that. Offsite water isn't a very common loss unless you are dealing with a basement. Just weigh your risk for the additional premium...
