let's talk unread emails and what is the point?

Wife just informed me that she has over 51,000 unread emails on her gmail account - I didn't believe it till she showed me. What is the point of having a email account (non-work related) if you aren't going to read them etc. I just lol'd when she showed me and no pics.

I saw my friend's phone the other day and it showed that he had 61,463 unread emails. It blew my freakin mind. I can't stand where there are 5 much less thousands

I have a few folders/labels in my main non-work account that have a bunch of unread emails. And I have a few junk emails that have as many unread emails as received emails.
My phone sync emails have zero unread (spam labels don't trigger a notification).

I'm right there with ya, if I'm traveling they might build up and i'll get caught up in a few days. But anything over several hundred and I'd just delete the account and call it a day.

Because you can see what the emails are by the subject without having to read them.
