re: Return to Being LSU: I Love That This Game Matters, Even If It Doesn't

Man, I hope that Tiger Stadium is loud tomorrow night.
They were showing the Earthquake Game a while back on SEC Network. I was there for that game. LSU was 2-2 at the time and had lost their previous 2 games. The week before they lost to Florida 19-6. But, Tiger Stadium was sold out and the place was rocking. When Hodson hit Fuller in the back of the end zone the earth moved. There were only 79,000 fans there, which was capacity at the time.
79,000 Tiger faithful made the earth move. They never gave up on their 2-2, unranked LSU Tigers and one of the greatest moments in LSU history happened. The reason that the eruption of noise was so great was because LSU had not been able to move the ball the entire game up until that last drive.
Here is how The Advocate tells it:

Before that final 75 yard drive, LSU had 28 yards rushing on 27 carries. They could not move the ball at all and I do not remember if they ever crossed midfield before that drive. I know they were never in scoring position. It was the only regular season game that Auburn lost.
We need the roar of Tiger Stadium back. Back then, it didn't matter if LSU was undefeated or had a great offense. The Tiger fans cheered for the Tigers and Death Valley earned its name the night the Valley shook.
She needs to wake up again tomorrow night.

To say LSU limped into the Auburn game that year was an understatement. LSU started off an impressive 2-0, blanking No. 10 Texas A&M 27-0 and routing Tennessee 34-9 on the road. But back-to-back losses at Ohio State and Florida left LSU 2-2 and 0-1 in the Southeastern Conference, its season almost over. Auburn sauntered into Baton Rouge 4-0 and ranked No. 4, in the midst of a tremendous four-year stretch in which they went 39-7-2, won or shared three SEC titles and never finished lower than eighth in the final polls. “‘We felt we would blow you out,’” Auburn great Tracy Rocker told LSU running back Eddie Fuller years later when they were in the NFL. “They wanted to come into Tiger Stadium and get up on us quick and get our fans out of the game. “It didn’t happen that way.”

We did it!
Amazing win for LSU. Everything that I hoped for in this post happened.
Tiger Stadium was rocking. Just like it used to.
