Thought it was excellent and very realistic except for when they fought the German troops at the end. I felt that the troops would have gotten behind the tank very early on and taken them out quickly. Found that part very unbelievable.

What was the point of the horse story? And why were they so pissed that Sarge and Norman were having dinner with the women?

They had been together since North Africa in 1942-43. Sarge takes Norman away by himself and sits down and has dinner with him without the rest of the crew. Men who have spent the last 2 1/2 years bleeding for each other might take offense to the sergeant wining and dining the FNG.

The point of the story was they had been through hell with the sergeant, and they felt that the first opportunity he had to basically get a "wingman" who was more sophisticated than them, he took Norman to go have a fancy double dinner date with two respectable German women while they had to basically share a whore in the tank.
