I lived there for about a year, go to the south side (bryan beach) and get on the beach and head south to the mouth of the brazos river. I slaughtered reds, specs and flounder there on the regular. Try to throw you bait where the fresh and salt meet. Best bait there was any purple swimbait with a chartreuse tail. outgoing tide, fish in the surf, incoming fish closer to the mouth or in a little. Let us know now you did since that is the ONLY thing I miss about that place. Only time I did well at the jetties was at night with lights/generator when the water was clear. If the wind is coming out of the southeast all I can tell you is good luck cause you'll need it.
CSB: had a downpour one morning, I headed out there after work and tbe river was dumping a ton of fresh water. Flounder were literally jumping out onto the bank. Picked up an ice chest full without taking my pole out of the truck.

I went to high school near there. The Freeport jetty can be productive for Specks and Sand trout. I tried to use live shrimp as much as possible underneath a cork. Use a small treble hook like a #10.

Great memories from there. A few beers, bonfires and BJs were had on that beach and Follets Beach.

Shawn is right about the purple/chart combo on colors if you're going artificials.

If you do decide to surf fish (you'll know whether or not the water is clear when you crest the intracoastal bridge) then consider picking up some live shrimp. They used to have a little bait shop near Beach Bait & Tackle that sold the live shrimp. If you're lucky you can score some pompano too.

If you want to wade fish on the bay side there's some great flounder fishing in Christmas Bay. Look at google maps for a few entries from Blue Water Hwy to Christmas bay.

Fish it often but it really doesn't turn on until the Summer time when the trout invade the surf and then it's only really good when the surf clears up when the wind dies down. Best bet is to use your regular trout catching gear, get some live shrimp, and hope for the best.

You will have more luck catching crabs at a bar in Freeport than actually catching the real ones. Best bet is to stop at Joes's en route in Pearland.

New to the area . . . How would one get there from Houston? What road to take to get access to beach?

288 South to Freeport, then follow the signs to get you to the beach. Sorry, I don't know actual street names.

Be out there on moving tide, use a sliding cork that is rigged between 6-10', keep adjusting til you find strike zone. Either live shrimp or DOA. Cast as far as you can, pop the cork back into you. I've done fair on Spanish Maxkeral there and a few spex. Unfortunately you guys are a few weeks before it starts to turn on. What's humorous is the Asian fishing rigs out there- they're standing on tip toes trying to cast 5 feet of line.

Fishing is fishing when it comes to me and my old man. I actually go down to surfside maybe three times a year, so there's always next time too

Crabbing was ineffective to say the least.

We tried Friday night and all we were able to see was a few small blue crabs in the bayous. I got reports from locals that told me nothing was biting. Sat, we tried to use the ghost shrimp vacuumes with the intention of surf fishing with the shrimp as bait. Sadly, the tide was too high to get to the lil buggers. There were a couple of guys fishing the surf with nl bait shrimp that had no luck at all. So, I was not really encouraged to fish.

Sen reported to me that on Sat no one on the jetty even had a bite.

We had a great time on the beach albeit a bit chilly and enjoyed a surfside sunrise service and I discovered fire roasted/toasted peeps are MUCH better than out of the package peeps.

yeah, prob a hundred or more people on the north jetty... Dolphins and Pelicans seemed to be feasting on the fish about thirty-forty yards outside of the furthest cast. Didn't see a single catch from my time there, 8am-12:30pm saturday (dad missed two small strikes).

water needs to warm up a bit, and I'm willing to bet the fish will too.

I will say though, there was certainly no shortage of preparedness by the (seemingly) regular fishers there, lots of wagons, dollys, or custom rigs with coolers, nets and rod holders. definitely looked like some serious stuff

Great time at the beach Friday and after fishing saturday. whether was excellent and gf was looking good too

great weekend though, will try again with dad and brother soon, I'm thinking surf fishing San Luis Pass

ETA: sorry for taking so long to post, just got back to BR
