First post on this board.

Doing a short debate in a class tomorrow about Govt. regulation of political activities of business and I pulled the Con side.

Just wondering if anyone had any quick bullet points I could add about why the political activities of businesses should not be regulated.

Thanks in advance.

Because it is a free country and a private business should be able to be involved politically in any way that it chooses.

I have a sneaky suspicion you're one of those narcs from the NSA or IRS.

The business of America is business.

Here's an article that explains why it's important to let business operate freely.

How do you define a political activity?

If a small business owner tells his or her customers how a specific policy affects them, that has political consequences. Or you might have a case where a regulation or new law prohibits the business from doing something that both it and the customer want...should the business owner be allowed to explain the situation? Obviously yes, even if it influences the customer's vote.

The government imposes a lot of regulations and taxes on businesses. They can't turn around and tell those businesses that they aren't allowed to fight back.

The main thing is making sure people understand that "groups" don't have "rights"...only individuals have rights.

Businesses are nothing more than a collection of individuals. If individuals have a right to political activities and freedom of association (which they clearly do), then it stands to reason that businesses (a group of individuals) have a right to political activity.

You can point out how limiting political speech is most often undertaken by one side trying to silence the other, not a blanket silencing of all points of view; and tie that into the tyranny of limiting free speech to promote single-party rule.
