Must have skipped the ammonia bath. Maybe caustic soda baths are next.

Well we have three grocery stores here, Kroger, Brookshire's and Walmart. We shop at Kroger guess I need to look into this, thanks for posting.

looks like my choice to drive past Kroger on Montrose to shop at HEB is vindicated

I haven't shopped at Kroger in about 20 years, and not sure if they have different ground meat options, but Id bet that they do. The biggest NO NO in my estimation is first in purchasing meat that's been ground at a meat packaging plant rather than at the grocery store, because of the sheer volume that they produce of hundreds of cows becoming one giant ground cow, as well as the conditions and the contamination concerns, and secondly, never purchase tubes of cheap ground meat. The safest bet is to of course grind your own meat if you have the tools to do that, but if not, then buy ground meat that is ground in house in the meat department of the grocery store, or best at a local meat market by butchers if you have access to one. Ground meat and the handling thereof is surely one of, if not the number one, things to be concerned with when shopping for groceries.

I don't think ground meat was in the recall this time, mostly just fajita meat packaged in large quantities, which is a whole 'nother level of nastiness.

Boy, you're right. That really is a whole nother level of nasty when you have to worry about E. coli on meat that wasn't even ground, but alas, it was handled when cut. Same problem in the handling no doubt. Looks like it was all seasoned as well. I'd be curious to know the chain of events that led to that lunacy.
E. coli on steak meat or seasoning, and salmonella on spinach and in peanut butter. WTF?
