Or is it all rental with the lastes gen? now a days with a simple line of code they can lock you out of the game. Not saying they will but they could so any game you own weather digital or hard copy, is there any real sense of ownership anymore?

When you purchase a game, you're actually purchasing a license to play the game.
That's how it's always been.
My only concern is server abandonment/discontinuation of service. No more xbox originals on live as an example.

As long as you can play the game anytime you want what's the difference?

I don't like digital downloads. I'd rather have a physical copy.

As far as steam goes, I feel comfortable buying games on the service because they are a pioneer of digital download services. They are constantly coming up with fresh new ideas such as big picture and greenlight. For that reason, I feel they will be around and relevant for an indefinite time.
I am always very conscious of buying content on consoles though. Their marketplaces seem very volatile with content constantly disappearing and not being available cross platform. frick that.
