Daniel Orton - Should We?

I know I know. This always happens. However, this is a 7 footer that can actually play. I am not sure why he was cut except that they have a plethora of bigs like him.
I'd love to add him on a minimum deal.

I know he's supposed to have potential, but he hasn't proven he can "actually play" Lance Thomas played twice as many minutes last year than Orton has played in 2 years. His rebound rate and block rate are pretty bad for someone that's supposed to be a physcial specimen. Orton's stats
I've got no problem letting him compete with Onuaku for the 15th spot on the team, but I wouldn't even expect that he can beat out Onuaku.

I would certainly like to see him come in and compete. He is young and big. Worth a look.

His rebound rate is 14.3%, that's only slightly better than Lopez and Jason Smith who both run around 13. His block rate is 2.2 compared to Smith's 4.3 and Lopez' 5.0. Being a physical freak is supposed to be what makes Orton special, I'd expect better numbers than that. Again, I'm all for giving him a shot, but what he's shown so far doesn't make me think he's any better than Onuaku.

I'd definitely bring him in to camp just to kick the tires.

How much can you really look at a "per 36" when in 2 seasons he has only played 29 games averaging 10 min per. That is an extremely small sample size. He has played less than 300 total minutes.
But, someone will give him a chance in camp. He has potential and will likely make a team. He prob shouldn't have come out of Kentucky after one year. His lack of numbers and lack of development were clear when he came out.

They seem to be looking for something pretty specific judging by how quickly Carney was released. If Demps wanted a big that would be better than Withey this season, he could have signed someone like Cole Aldrich to a minimum deal. I think that says they don't see upgrades for their rotation players and don't want anyone else getting in the way of their bench players developing.

He couldn't even play in college

You're dogging 23 year old who's never gotten a chance to prove himself. I think Orton is worth a roster spot. 7 footers whose bodies aren't breaking down don't grow on trees. Plus Pels are starting fricking Stiemsma at center

Because he's not good enough to get on the floor.

Bigs who give you absolutely nothing besides being big are pretty easy to find.

Stiemsma blocks shots, Orton can't do that.
