So when someone trades you cash, what exactly does that mean? Is it literally cash that the owner puts in his pocket?

More or less, yes. It becomes revenue for the franchise.

Robert Sarver used (still does sometimes) to trade late first round picks for $3 million all the time. Conversely, Paul Allen used to buy picks all the time for the Blazers.
