Discussion
- A few things really stand out to me. First, Tuba has went from a band walk-on to a player that is now in the Top 100 in the nation in a statistical category and Top 10 in the SEC. The development of this kid has been nothing less than remarkable and while he won't win the Naismith anytime soon, I for one really appreciate his story.
- Second, Shavon Coleman is really a poor man's Noel Nerlins, in the sense that he can literally do it all. Blocks, Steals, Rebounds, Points...it doesn't matter. He is amazing how quiet he is on the court, and before you know it, he has a double double.
- Despite the fact that this team does not have a single player in the Top 100 nationally or Top 10 in the SEC in terms of three point percentage, we are in both categories as a team. It really speaks to the ability of the team to play as a well-rounded entity, rather than just 1-2 standout players doing everything.
- Its easy to knock these statistics and point to them being generated in non-conference, but keep in mind that with the exception of maybe Kentucky or Mizzou, no one has played a brutal non-conference schedule. Furthermore, we are one of the few teams that haven't looked AWFUL in non-conference play. Auburn losing to Winthrop, Alabama losing to Mercer AND Tulane, Texas A&M losing to Southern, and Tennessee struggling to score 40 points are just a few examples. I think this gives some validity to how our stats may stack up in the SEC.
- In his first year, Coach Johnny Jones has this team performing in or near the Top 100 Nationally and in the Top 5 in the SEC in almost every category. His system has four players nationally ranked and the talent we have coming in next year may be better than what we currently have. Free throws we won't speak of, but we are improving there as well. We are easily defeating teams we should beat and competitive in toss up games. We pull it together to finish opponents when we have a big lead and we claw our way back when we are down against tough opponents. There is a lot of heart and fight in this squad, and as many have said, it is a reflection of the guy commanding things from the bench. It is really pleasant to see a team that performs just as well on the court as it does on the stat sheet, and we will only get better in the coming years.

Great post. I really wish Justin Hamilton would've stayed or even Calvin Godfrey would've made it onto the court because with one more inside presence I think we would have an NCAA tournament team. I am really excited to see what SEC play brings.

Stringer's form is looking amazing too. It would be nice to see him finish with a solid 3 pt % by season's end.

Really nice post Famous. Agree it is wonderful how well Johnny has them playing. I think it does get tricky when we start wishing we had this player or that player though. One of the things that can't be measured by statistics is team chemistry. One of the most important things in my opinion. Would we still be playing as a team if we had some of those players mentioned? Basketball is tricky in that it is a team sport more than any other but an individual can ignore this and play one on one.
The best thing Johnny has done is get them to play together and execute his offensive and defensive schemes. On paper only a couple of our players are very good but the whole is much greater than the parts.

I agree completely, especially about chemistry. Basketball is the only sport where literally every player in the game can touch the ball on a given possession. Still, it does hurt when JOB goes out with foul trouble and we are left trying to figure out how in the hell we can get the ball within 15 feet of the basket.
That said, CJJ is definitely getting the most out of what he has.

Spot on. I have been very impressed with Coleman. He's undersized and forced to play out of position, yet, he finds a way to get it done game in and game out. He will be LSU's "glue guy" next year (if he's not that already this year)

Agreed. The range of his game is a pleasant surprise too. Whether its the three ball, top of the key looking to make a pass, or down low, Coleman really looks comfortable.
