RIP

Guy hustled and played the game right

Always dealt with off the field issues - multiple dui's + mental issues

Heard voices in his head (Farney)

Damn. Watched a lot of Freel as a Reds fan and at the Bats in Triple A.

ETA: I remember him talking about the "voice" he heard in his head too. I think it was pretty clear he dealt with some mental issues. Poor guy.

"I've got this little midget in my head. I was like, 'Hey, Farney, I don't know if that was you who caught that ball. That was pretty good if that was you.'" --Freel

"He talks to me once in awhile. The guys give me a hard time about this extra man in my head." --Freel

"He actually made a comment like, 'How are the voices in your head?' We'd play around and finally this year he said, 'What's the guy's name?' I said, 'Let's call him Farney.' So now everybody's like, 'Run, Farney, run' or 'Let Farney hit today. You're not hitting very well.'" --Freel, on how Farney originated after a conversation with trainer Mark Mann

The guy hustled no doubt, but he was one of the worst baserunners I have ever seen. He ran the Reds out of a lot of scoring opportunities. Nevertheless, it's very sad to see anyone resort to suicide.

Sad. But the only good thing I can say, in light of recent tragedies, is that I am thankful he didn't hurt anyone else.

Sad news, not a Reds fan but he was fun to watch in the field. Gave it his all on every play.

Completely random, but when I saw this it made me think of one of the greatest sports plays I've seen live. Only time ever in Cincinatti and went to a Reds Cardinals game. Freel robbed pujols on a dead sprint diving catch in left center that I'll never forget. Got a standing O, and his next AB he beat out an infielder grounder for a single. Never ever heard a crowd go that crazy over an infield hit. Carry over from the catch and acknowledgement over the straight hustle. Sad to see this tonight

Agree with you here. Probably the least talented on the field at most times but he busted his arse every pitch. Sad to see anyone go this way.

I hate that. He was my favorite player in the last 10 years because of the way he played the game. I think I've bought 3 baseball cards in the last 15 years and all 3 have been freel's.

Didn't know about the voices but I know he had multiple concussions. Sounds like he had schizophrenia.
