In real life Andy and his wife had an open marriage and he had a long term affair with the actress who played Ms. Crump.

Southern Gospel singing Andy Griffith in an open marriage?? nah... he did have the affair with Corsaut, though...

and it's not an affair if it's an open marriage, it's an arrangement...

Ford is in the ending credits as the official provider for the show. The police car was a 1961. The recurring truck used on the show is a 1956 F100. The best looking truck along with the 1957 Chevy Apache ever built.

He was a funny dude,he had a bad stroke, thought he was done and became a recluse,Griffith got his wife to talk him into coming back to the show, that’s why he was mostly sitting down in the show for the last few seasons

I remember him having health issues in the last couple of seasons. In addition to sitting during takes, I think his stroke also affected the use of one of his arms and he placed it in his lap while using the other to point and hold objects. He was a tough cookie.

When I was young I had no appreciation for the absurdity and nuance of his character... Liked the over-the-top Ernest T. Now I think Floyd is the funniest character on the show. And Briscoe Darling....

The scene on the bench, in front of the barber shop, when Floyd is talking about the hot weather, Calvin Coolidge etc... Just Gold.

Anyway,

Howard McNear volunteered for the Army Air Corps as a 37 year old married man. He had every excuse not to go and went anyway.

My favorite episode involving Floyd is when he and Barney get kidnapped by escaped female convicts. The leader, Big Maude, also played Barney's singing teacher Eleanora Poultice and matchmaker Mrs. Wiley.

To this day no one knows who played Mr. Schwump.

The episode where Howard Sprague gets invited to a lodge meeting they were going to give Mr. Schwump a line to speak but he was too nervous to do it.
