Early baseball observations

Since I would rather talk about baseball than firing Coach O, I figured I would start a thread.
Catcher: Right now Milazzo has a grip on the starting job. I'm seeing a little life in his bat and I hope he can at least be serviceable on offense. The competition behind him has not stepped up yet. His main competition McManus has had quite a few strike outs. Plenty of time for that to change. A selfless player that I always enjoy seeing doing well is Braiden Doughty who has hit well.
Infield: Thompson is your SS end of story. Look for some highlights this year from him. I don't think Morgan is moving off of 1B but he is dealing with an injury right now and that might be why he hasn't seen any time in the outfield. Merrifield has played really good defense at 3B and had a HR this Sunday. Berry hasn't quite flashed the bat yet, but we know it is coming. What is more concerning is he had two throwing errors. If Berry moves to DH and Morgan stays at 1B that will close the door on some hitters. Jobert, Leto, Beloso, Pearson, Drost, etc. would not have the option at DH with Berry there.
As for the backups on the infield. Cranford and Holt seem to be battling for the backup SS and both could play 2B. Safford had a HR Saturday and Sunday and has been seeing time at 2B. Cade Doughty has seen time all over, SS, 2B and even moved to 3B with Merrifield to 2B late Sunday. Primarily Cade D. has been playing 2B. Simon is a good player but seems down the depth chart right now. Smith is a good looking 1B, wide and strong looking with pretty nimble feet but right now down the depth chart. Jobert, Leto and Bianco are dealing with injuries. I don't know what the injuries are but it seems that Leto might be the only one that looks serious.
Outfield: It has been Gio, Dugas and Drost. Crews has been out with an injury but he is going to bounce one of these guys when he returns and it won't be Dugas. If Drost keeps hitting like he has the first 3 scrimmages he will have to play. Drost is a possibility at DH if Berry is not moved there. If not it could be Crews to CF and Drost in RF. The only question I have with Drost is when we get to the SEC and good pitchers start exploiting his weaknesses ( off speed, lefties) will the hot bat still hold up?
Pearson and Stevenson are battling right now it is pretty even. I think Stevenson has the advantage on defense and has been backing up CF with Crews and Bianco out. Stevenson hit well this summer and has hit well this fall so far. This will be a fun battle to watch. Haddad has been playing in the outfield and has done well.
Pitchers: Hard to evaluate from the stands but from what I can tell Coleman and Reyzelman are friday and Saturday guys. The third starter could be quite competitive. We know Hilliard can do it, then there is Fontenot, Edwards and Floyd.
As for closers, Money looked good and has the personality for it. Gervase, Edwards and of course Fontenot could all factor in.
Overall I'm getting excited about the defensive potential of this team. There have not been many errors and Milazzo, Thompson, Morgan, Merrifield, Doughty, Gio and Crews could all be elite defenders.

Hopefully he’s learned how to play shortstop

No way Johnson got this kid to BR without guaranteeing a spot in the field. This is his draft year. He's not going to DH.

How has Cole Lansville looked?

I'm kinda hoping our scrimmages simulate the SEC and good pitchers trying to exploit his weaknesses (off speed, lefties) otherwise our 2022 season is frickED.

I am definitely interested to see how the outfield starters situation plays out.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Crews has agreed to a Marucci NIL deal that keeps him at LSU through his senior year?
Posted on 10/11/21 at 12:22 pm to N2daWild
Bottom line during sec play you better be strong defensively up the middle and if you have to sacrifice a little offense you do

Hopefully the middle relievers and hitting will be better this year.
It got tiring watching the middle inning pitchers come in a blow it or watching our entire lineup stare at pitches right down the middle then swing at stuff in the dirt.

Good write up.
I agree that it's hard to predict anyone on the infield right now besides Thompson.
Berry could play anywhere of 3B, 2B, 1B. Morgan could play 1B or CF. Merrifield and Doughty could each play 3B or 2B. Those 4 are a cut above the rest right now.

I generally agree with your analysis. I think starting catcher is Milazzo with McManus filling in. Braden Doughty's role will be the same as in past years due to his defensive deficiencies.
Infield should be 1st-Morgan, 2nd-Doughty, SS-Thompson, 3rd-Merrifield. I know nothing about a promise to Berry and, as yet, I've seen nothing that makes me think he has earned a starting spot. Morgan may have the same shoulder problem that limited him last year, he is not throwing or batting during scrimmages.
Outfield should begin the season the same way it was last season; RF-Crews, CF-DiGiacomo, LF-Dugas. I like what I've seen from the younger guys (Drost, Stevenson, Pearson, and Haddad) but they will be backups to start the season.
Starting pitchers should be the three I saw Friday night. Reyzelman, Coleman, and Cooper based on one outing. Obviously it's too early to predict the weekend rotation but all three looked sharp. I like the experienced Devin Fontenot in the closer role. We have a few veteran relievers to fill the middle innings and a few more newcomers with potential coming from the bullpen. If the youngsters can make the transition to D1 ball, this staff could be pretty good.
LSU could field a very good offensive and/or defensive team depending on need this season based on the talent available. I think their success will depend on pitching, as usual, and timely hitting. I'm looking forward to the spring and Baseball at the Box.

Didn’t Gio miss most of the weekend because of injury again?
Posted on 10/11/21 at 4:29 pm to N2daWild
Gio will still not be a factor on this team, Elle

February is so far away. I can't wait and football can't get us through December happily.
So. Long. I need a fun early season midweek game.
