I guess the only thing you can’t fall in to is him playing himself back into grace.
"Back into grace" is kind of relative and, likely, depends on who else would be SERIOUSLY interested in the job. If you have the opportunity to get a new HC who seems like a "slam dunk" (similar to Kim Mulkey) then short of Orgeron running the table the rest of the way you pounce on that opportunity. But if the potential realistic candidates are multiple guys who still bring with them concerns that they can perform up to LSU's lofty expectations, then you have to consider are they better than an 8-4 (5-3) or 9-3 (6-2) Orgeron? Maybe.
While 8-4 and DEFINITELY 9-3 seems entirely unlikely right now, it's not completely off the table (UK, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas, A&M are all flawed team in one way or another). The AD can still quietly survey the landscape while letting the season play out. LSU isn't going to be a playoff team regardless of if they fire O now or at the end of the season. Firing a coach mid-season doesn't help you "get a jump" in finding the replacement. Hell, look no further than Tom Herman. He was "LSU's guy" for months...until he went to Texas 1-2 days after they fired Strong. So there is really no NEED to throw everything in flux other than to satiate the blood lust of angry fans
The AD needs to figure out what his reasonable expectations for the program are and if Orgeron is the guy capable of meeting them. It really is a strange juxtaposition. His first three years he was 34-7 with a NC in the greatest season in program history. Since, he's been an average to below average SEC HC. History says he is the below average HC we are seeing now. But history also show that with the right pieces in place he can be very successful.
I FULLY agree the program seems to be on a downward spiral with no end in sight right now...but that perception could look different by the end of the season.
